AustriaBirth:December 6, 1929 in Berlin, GermanyDeath:March 5, 2016 in St. Georgen, AustriaGenre:ChoralNikolaus Harnoncourt was a renowned Austrian conductor, cellist, and musicologist who was born on December 6, 1929, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of Erika Harnoncourt, a famous Austrian singer, and Ladislav Harnoncourt, a prominent art historian. Nikolaus grew up in Graz, Austria, where he received his early musical training from his mother and later studied cello at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1952, Harnoncourt joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as a cellist, but he soon became interested in historical performance practice and began to explore the music of the Baroque and Classical periods. He founded the Concentus Musicus Wien in 1953, which became one of the first ensembles to specialize in historically informed performance of early music. Harnoncourt's pioneering work in this field helped to revolutionize the way that music from the Baroque and Classical periods was performed and understood. Harnoncourt's career as a conductor began in the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most innovative and insightful interpreters of early music. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. One of Harnoncourt's most significant achievements was his complete recording of Bach's sacred cantatas, which he made with the Concentus Musicus Wien and the Tölzer Knabenchor. The project took over twenty years to complete and involved the recording of over two hundred cantatas. The recordings were widely praised for their historical accuracy and musical sensitivity and remain a landmark achievement in the history of recorded music. Harnoncourt was also a prolific writer and musicologist, and he published several influential books on the history and performance of early music. His writings helped to establish the principles of historically informed performance practice and inspired a new generation of musicians to explore the music of the past. Throughout his career, Harnoncourt received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1984 and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1992. He was also made an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Harnoncourt continued to perform and record music until his death on March 5, 2016, in St. Georgen im Attergau, Austria. His legacy as a conductor, cellist, and musicologist remains a vital part of the history of classical music, and his pioneering work in the field of historically informed performance practice continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.More....
