Born on October 27, 1929, in Vienna, Austria, Equiluz grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a choir director, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Equiluz showed a keen interest in music and began singing in his father's choir. Equiluz received his formal music education at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor Julius Patzak. He made his debut as a soloist in 1955, performing the role of the Evangelist in Bach's St. John Passion. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in classical music. Throughout his career, Equiluz has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and the Royal Opera House in London. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Herbert von Karajan, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Equiluz's most notable performances was his portrayal of the role of the Evangelist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. His interpretation of the role was widely praised for its emotional depth and sensitivity. Equiluz's performance of the aria "Ich habe genug" from Bach's Cantata No. 82 is also considered to be one of his most memorable performances. Equiluz has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1974, he was awarded the title of Kammersänger by the Austrian government in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
