His father was a musicologist, and his mother was a pianist. Guschlbauer grew up in a musical family, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Guschlbauer began his musical education at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied harpsichord and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he studied with the famous conductor Herbert von Karajan. Guschlbauer also studied with the renowned harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam. In 1967, Guschlbauer made his debut as a conductor with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor, and he was soon invited to conduct orchestras all over Europe. In 1970, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his tenure with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Guschlbauer made several recordings, including works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. He also conducted the orchestra on several international tours, including a tour of the United States in 1973. In 1976, Guschlbauer was appointed the principal conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne in Switzerland. He held this position for 20 years, during which time he made numerous recordings and conducted the orchestra on tours all over the world. Guschlbauer was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, as well as for his performances of Baroque music. He was also a respected harpsichordist, and he often performed as a soloist with orchestras. In addition to his work as a conductor and harpsichordist, Guschlbauer was also a respected music educator. He taught conducting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the Conservatoire de Lausanne in Switzerland. Throughout his career, Guschlbauer received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1987, he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. In 1992, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. He was also awarded the Prix de la Critique in France and the Grand Prix du Disque in Belgium. Guschlbauer continued to perform and conduct until his death on March 19, 2016, at the age of 73.
