Giovanni Benedetto Platti was an Italian composer and oboist who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in Padua, Italy in 1697, and was the son of a violinist. Platti began his musical education at a young age, studying the oboe and violin with his father. He later studied with the renowned oboist Giuseppe Sammartini in Milan, and it was during this time that he began to compose his own music. Platti's early compositions were primarily for the oboe, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled performer and composer. In 1722, he was appointed as the oboist for the court of the Elector of Bavaria in Munich, where he remained for the rest of his life. During his time in Munich, Platti composed a wide variety of music, including operas, chamber music, and sacred music. One of Platti's most notable works is his Sonata in G minor for oboe and basso continuo. This piece is considered to be one of the finest examples of Baroque oboe music, and is still frequently performed today. Platti's other works for oboe include several concertos, sonatas, and chamber music pieces. In addition to his work as a composer, Platti was also a skilled oboe maker. He designed and built his own oboes, and his instruments were highly sought after by other musicians. Platti's oboes were known for their rich, warm tone and excellent intonation. Platti's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered to be one of the leading composers of his time. However, his music fell out of favor in the years following his death, and it was not until the 20th century that his work began to be rediscovered and appreciated once again. Today, Platti is recognized as an important figure in the development of Baroque music, particularly for the oboe. His compositions are known for their technical skill and emotional depth, and his influence can be heard in the work of many later composers. Despite the relative obscurity of his music during his lifetime, Platti's legacy continues to live on through his compositions and his contributions to the development of the oboe as an instrument.
