He was the son of a church musician and began his musical education at a young age. He studied piano, violin, and composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and later at the Leipzig Conservatory. Genzmer's early compositions were influenced by the neoclassical style of the time, but he later developed his own unique style that incorporated elements of jazz and folk music. He was also interested in electronic music and was one of the first composers to use the Moog synthesizer in his compositions. In 1935, Genzmer began teaching at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he remained until 1945. During this time, he also worked as a freelance composer and wrote music for films and radio broadcasts. In 1945, he moved to Munich and began teaching at the Hochschule für Musik there. Genzmer's compositions include works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and voice. Some of his most notable works include his Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, his Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, and his Symphony No. 1. He also wrote several operas, including Der Prozess (The Trial) and Die Bürger von Calais (The Burghers of Calais). In addition to his work as a composer, Genzmer was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich for over 30 years and was known for his innovative teaching methods. He also served as a guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. Genzmer received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian Order of Merit.
