United KingdomBirth:April 20, 1943 in Springhead, Dorset, EnglandPeriod:ContemporaryGenre:ChoralJohn Eliot Gardiner is a renowned British conductor and musicologist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on April 20, 1943, in Fontmell Magna, Dorset, England, Gardiner was raised in a family of musicians. His father, Rolf Gardiner, was a composer and folklorist, while his mother, Marabel Hodgkin, was a professional flutist. Gardiner's early exposure to music and his family's musical background played a significant role in shaping his career as a musician. Gardiner began his musical education at the age of five, learning to play the violin and piano. He later attended Bryanston School, where he continued his musical studies and developed a keen interest in choral music. After completing his studies at Bryanston, Gardiner went on to study history at King's College, Cambridge. During his time at Cambridge, he became involved in the college's music scene and founded the Monteverdi Choir in 1964. The Monteverdi Choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and Gardiner's conducting skills were widely praised. In 1968, he founded the Monteverdi Orchestra, which specialized in performing Baroque and early Classical music. The orchestra's performances were characterized by their historical accuracy and attention to detail, and they quickly gained a following among classical music enthusiasts. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gardiner continued to build his reputation as a conductor and musicologist. He conducted numerous orchestras and choirs, including the English Baroque Soloists, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also published several books on music, including a biography of Johann Sebastian Bach. One of Gardiner's most significant achievements came in 1989 when he founded the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. The orchestra specialized in performing music from the Romantic period, using period instruments and historical performance practices. The orchestra's performances were widely praised for their authenticity and energy, and they quickly became one of the most sought-after ensembles in the classical music world. Gardiner's career has been marked by numerous highlights and achievements. In 1990, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He has also received numerous honorary degrees and awards from universities and music organizations around the world. One of Gardiner's most memorable performances came in 2000 when he conducted a complete cycle of Bach's cantatas at the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. The pilgrimage involved performing all of Bach's cantatas in churches across Europe, and it was a massive undertaking that took over a year to complete. The performances were widely praised for their historical accuracy and emotional depth, and they cemented Gardiner's reputation as one of the world's leading interpreters of Bach's music. Gardiner has also been involved in numerous recordings throughout his career. He has recorded over 250 albums, many of which have won critical acclaim and awards. Some of his most notable recordings include his performances of Bach's Mass in B Minor, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. In addition to his work as a conductor and musicologist, Gardiner has also been involved in music education. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the Royal College of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York.More....
