Born on 16th March 1934 in London, England, Lloyd-Jones grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Lloyd-Jones showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Lloyd-Jones received his formal music education at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied conducting under Sir Adrian Boult. He also studied composition under Herbert Howells and conducting under Norman Del Mar. After completing his studies, Lloyd-Jones began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and opera companies in the UK. One of Lloyd-Jones's early successes was his appointment as the music director of the English Northern Philharmonia in 1978. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained a reputation for excellence and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe. Lloyd-Jones also served as the principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 1985 to 1988, where he led the orchestra in numerous acclaimed performances and recordings. Throughout his career, Lloyd-Jones has been a champion of British music, particularly the works of lesser-known composers. He has conducted many world premieres of works by British composers, including William Alwyn, Arnold Bax, and George Lloyd. He has also recorded several albums of British music, including a series of recordings of the orchestral works of Edward Elgar. Lloyd-Jones has also been a frequent guest conductor with orchestras around the world. He has conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also conducted at major music festivals, including the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of Lloyd-Jones's most significant achievements was his work with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He was appointed the orchestra's principal conductor in 1991 and held the position until 2001. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous acclaimed performances and recordings, including a complete cycle of the symphonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams. He also oversaw the orchestra's move to its new home, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, in 1995. Lloyd-Jones has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1994, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Liverpool and the University of Huddersfield. In 2014, he was awarded the Elgar Medal by the Elgar Society in recognition of his contributions to the performance and recording of Elgar's music. In addition to his work as a conductor, Lloyd-Jones is also a respected musicologist and author. He has written several books on music, including a biography of the composer George Lloyd and a study of the music of Edward Elgar. He has also contributed articles and reviews to numerous music journals and magazines. Now in his late 80s, Lloyd-Jones continues to be an active conductor and music director. He remains committed to promoting the works of British composers and to bringing classical music to new audiences.More....
