The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is a classical music ensemble based in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, it is one of the oldest orchestras in the United Kingdom. The RSNO has a rich history of performances and awards, and has become one of the most respected orchestras in the world. The Scottish Orchestra was founded in 1891 by a group of musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra in Scotland. The first conductor was George Henschel, a German-born conductor and pianist. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and in 1950 it was granted royal status by King George VI, becoming the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Over the years, the RSNO has had many distinguished conductors, including Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, and Stéphane Denève. The current music director is Thomas Søndergård, who took over in 2018. Søndergård is a Danish conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras, and has been praised for his innovative programming and dynamic performances. The RSNO has a core of around 60 full-time musicians, and also works with a number of guest musicians and conductors. The orchestra performs a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary, and has a particular focus on Scottish composers and music. One of the highlights of the RSNO's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. The orchestra played a specially commissioned piece by Scottish composer James MacMillan, which was broadcast live to millions of viewers around the world. The RSNO has also performed at many other prestigious events, including the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. The RSNO has won many awards over the years, including several Gramophone Awards and a Royal Philharmonic Society Award. In 2012, the orchestra won the prestigious Diapason d'Or de l'Année award for its recording of the complete symphonies of Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan. In addition to its performances, the RSNO is also committed to education and outreach. The orchestra runs a number of programs for young people, including the RSNO Junior Chorus and the RSNO Youth Orchestra. The RSNO also works with schools and community groups to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is a world-class ensemble with a rich history and a commitment to excellence in performance and education. With its talented musicians and innovative programming, the RSNO is sure to continue to be a major force in the world of classical music for many years to come.
