Born on December 16, 1939, in Hawkhurst, Kent, Langridge grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned vocal coach Herbert Howells. Langridge made his professional debut in 1964, singing the role of the First Armed Man in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Glyndebourne Festival. He quickly established himself as a rising star in the world of classical music, and over the course of his career, he performed with many of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras. One of Langridge's most notable performances was his portrayal of the title character in Benjamin Britten's "Peter Grimes." Langridge first performed the role in 1975 at the English National Opera, and he went on to perform it many times throughout his career. His interpretation of the role was widely praised for its emotional depth and intensity, and it helped establish him as one of the foremost interpreters of Britten's music. Langridge was also known for his performances of the music of Franz Schubert. He recorded several of Schubert's song cycles, including "Die schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise," and his interpretations of these works were widely regarded as some of the finest ever recorded. Langridge's ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of Schubert's music was a testament to his skill as a singer and his deep understanding of the composer's work. Throughout his career, Langridge received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1994, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music, and in 2002, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal, one of the highest honors in the world of classical music. Langridge was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and an Honorary Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. Langridge continued to perform well into his later years, and his final performance was in 2010, when he sang the role of the Witch in Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" at the Royal Opera House in London. He passed away on March 5, 2010, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest tenors of his generation.
