Period:ClassicalRomanticModernGenre:ChoralOperaJules Bastin was a Belgian bass-baritone who was widely regarded as one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. Born on August 18, 1933, in Waterloo, Belgium, Bastin grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he trained under the renowned bass-baritone, Louis Devos. Bastin made his professional debut in 1960, singing the role of Colline in Puccini's La Bohème at the ThĂ©Ă¢tre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. He quickly established himself as a rising star in the opera world, and over the next few years, he performed in a number of major productions across Europe. One of Bastin's most notable early performances was in 1963, when he sang the role of King Philip II in Verdi's Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House in London. The performance was a huge success, and Bastin received widespread critical acclaim for his powerful and nuanced portrayal of the troubled monarch. Over the next few years, Bastin continued to perform in a variety of operas, including Mozart's Don Giovanni, Rossini's The Barber of Seville, and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman. He also began to receive invitations to perform in major opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Paris Opera. In 1970, Bastin made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. He sang the role of Osmin in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, and his performance was widely regarded as one of the highlights of the festival. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Bastin continued to perform in a wide range of operas, including Verdi's Aida, Bizet's Carmen, and Donizetti's Don Pasquale. He also began to take on more teaching roles, and he served as a professor of voice at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels from 1978 to 1998. One of Bastin's most memorable performances came in 1983, when he sang the role of Boris Godunov in Mussorgsky's opera of the same name at the Paris Opera. The performance was a huge success, and Bastin received widespread critical acclaim for his powerful and emotional portrayal of the troubled Russian tsar. Over the course of his career, Bastin received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the title of "Commander of the Order of the Crown" by the Belgian government, in recognition of his achievements as a musician and cultural ambassador. He was also awarded the title of "Chevalier de la LĂ©gion d'honneur" by the French government in 1990. Bastin retired from performing in 1998, but he continued to be active in the world of classical music as a teacher and mentor. He passed away on December 2, 1996, at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest opera singers of his generation.More....
