John Alldis was a renowned British conductor and choral director who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on September 26, 1929, in London, Alldis grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a professional singer, and his mother was a pianist. Alldis showed an early interest in music and began singing in his church choir at a young age. Alldis received his formal education in music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied conducting and choral music. He also received training in piano and voice, which helped him develop a well-rounded understanding of music. After completing his studies, Alldis began his career as a conductor and choral director. One of the highlights of Alldis's career was his work with the London Symphony Orchestra. He served as the chorus master for the orchestra from 1962 to 1971, during which time he conducted numerous performances and recordings. Alldis was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his singers and musicians. Alldis also worked with other prominent orchestras and choirs throughout his career. He conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition to his work as a conductor and choral director, Alldis was also a respected educator. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he mentored many young musicians and conductors. In 1971, he was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He was also awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1989. Alldis passed away on December 20, 2010, at the age of 81. He left behind a legacy of excellence in music and a generation of musicians and conductors who were inspired by his work.
