He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and he began his musical education at a young age. Silvestri studied at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he was a student of Mihail Jora, a prominent Romanian composer and conductor. Silvestri's career as a conductor began in 1936 when he was appointed as the conductor of the Bucharest Opera. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and he was soon invited to conduct orchestras throughout Europe. In 1940, Silvestri was appointed as the conductor of the Romanian State Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1944. During World War II, Silvestri was forced to flee Romania due to his opposition to the fascist regime. He spent several years in Italy, where he continued to conduct and compose music. In 1947, Silvestri moved to England, where he became the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He remained with the orchestra for 11 years, during which time he established himself as one of the leading conductors in the country. Silvestri's career reached new heights in the 1960s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He held this position from 1963 until 1967, and during this time he conducted some of the orchestra's most memorable performances. Silvestri was known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians, and he was highly respected for his musical interpretations. One of Silvestri's most notable achievements was his work with the Romanian composer George Enescu. Silvestri was a close friend and collaborator of Enescu, and he conducted many of his works throughout his career. In 1955, Silvestri conducted the world premiere of Enescu's opera "Oedipe" at the Royal Opera House in London. The performance was a great success, and it helped to establish Enescu as one of the leading composers of the 20th century. Silvestri was also a prolific composer, and he wrote music in a variety of genres. His compositions include orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, his Piano Concerto, and his String Quartet No. 1. Throughout his career, Silvestri received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music.
