Born on 25th April 1945 in Zaandam, Netherlands, Bakels showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he specialized in conducting. Bakels began his career as a conductor in 1970 when he was appointed as the conductor of the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon invited to conduct other orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad. In 1978, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra, a position he held until 1982. In 1982, Bakels was appointed as the principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the United Kingdom. This was a significant milestone in his career, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading conductors in the country. During his tenure with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Bakels conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete symphonies of Jean Sibelius, which received critical acclaim. Bakels' success with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra led to numerous invitations to conduct other orchestras in the UK and abroad. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a conductor, Bakels has also been a prolific recording artist. He has recorded over 50 albums, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, and Sibelius. His recordings have received numerous awards, including the Edison Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Gramophone Award. Bakels has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, a prestigious honor in the Netherlands. In 2002, he was awarded the Sibelius Medal by the Finnish government for his contributions to the music of Jean Sibelius. In 2010, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to German music. Despite his many achievements, Bakels remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to conduct concerts and recordings around the world and is highly respected by his peers and audiences alike.
