In 1962, Berglund was appointed the principal conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for ten years. He also conducted several performances of Sibelius' music with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, including a performance of the complete incidental music to The Tempest. In addition to his work with Sibelius, Berglund was also known for his interpretations of the music of other composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky.
