Robert Veyron-Lacroix was a French harpsichordist and pianist who was born on November 13, 1922, in Mâcon, France. He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical education at a young age. He studied piano and harpsichord at the Paris Conservatory, where he won first prize in both instruments. After completing his studies, Veyron-Lacroix began performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading harpsichordists of his generation. He was known for his elegant and refined playing style, as well as his deep understanding of Baroque music. In the 1950s, Veyron-Lacroix began collaborating with the renowned French soprano, Jeanne Demessieux. The two musicians formed a close partnership and performed together extensively throughout Europe and the United States. They recorded several albums together, including a highly acclaimed recording of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." Veyron-Lacroix also worked with many other prominent musicians during his career. He performed with the French conductor Pierre Boulez and the American conductor Leonard Bernstein, among others. He was a member of the Ensemble Baroque de Paris and the Orchestre de Chambre Jean-François Paillard. One of Veyron-Lacroix's most notable performances was his appearance at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. He performed a solo recital on the harpsichord, which was broadcast live on television throughout Europe. The performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. Veyron-Lacroix was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded numerous albums of Baroque music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti. He was particularly known for his recordings of Bach's keyboard music, which are still considered some of the finest interpretations of these works. In addition to his performing and recording career, Veyron-Lacroix was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Paris Conservatory and the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he trained many of the leading harpsichordists and pianists of the next generation. Throughout his career, Veyron-Lacroix received many honors and awards for his contributions to classical music. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1964 and was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque several times for his recordings. He was also awarded the Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros and the Prix de la Fondation de la Vocation. Robert Veyron-Lacroix passed away on October 13, 1991, in Paris, France. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest harpsichordists and pianists of the 20th century. His recordings and performances continue to inspire and influence musicians today.
