Artist Info
Period:BaroqueGenre:ConcertoCelia Nicklin was a renowned oboist and a prominent figure in the classical music world. Born in London, England on June 7, 1936, Nicklin grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Nicklin began playing the oboe at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was a student of Terence MacDonagh. After completing her studies, Nicklin joined the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in 1958, where she would spend the next 36 years of her career. During her time with the LSO, Nicklin became one of the most respected oboists in the world. She was known for her beautiful tone and her ability to play with great sensitivity and expression. She was also a skilled chamber musician and performed with many of the world's leading ensembles, including the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Nash Ensemble. One of the highlights of Nicklin's career was her performance of Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" with the LSO in 1971. The performance was recorded and released on the Decca label, and it remains one of the most popular recordings of the piece to this day. Nicklin was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and many of her students went on to have successful careers in music. In recognition of her contributions to the classical music world, Nicklin was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990. She retired from the LSO in 1994 but continued to perform and teach until her death in 2012. Nicklin's legacy as a musician and teacher continues to inspire generations of oboists and classical musicians. Her beautiful playing and dedication to her craft will always be remembered as a shining example of excellence in the world of classical music.More....
