Piccinni studied music in Naples, where he became a pupil of Francesco Durante, a prominent composer of the time. He also studied with other notable composers, including Leonardo Leo and Niccolò Jommelli. During his time in Naples, Piccinni composed several operas, which were well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1756, Piccinni moved to Rome, where he continued to compose operas and other works.
