Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 Emperor, was composed between 1809 and 1811. It premiered on January 13, 1811, at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany, with Beethoven himself as the soloist. The concerto is divided into three movements. The first movement, Allegro, begins with a grand orchestral introduction before the piano enters with a majestic theme. The movement is characterized by its use of contrasting dynamics and tempos, as well as its virtuosic piano passages. The second movement, Adagio un poco mosso, is a serene and lyrical contrast to the first movement. The piano introduces a simple melody that is then taken up by the orchestra. The movement is notable for its use of solo instruments, including the clarinet and bassoon. The final movement, Rondo: Allegro ma non troppo, is a lively and energetic conclusion to the concerto. The piano and orchestra engage in a playful dialogue, with the piano introducing new themes and the orchestra responding with variations on previous themes. The movement builds to a triumphant conclusion, with the piano and orchestra playing in unison. The concerto is known for its grandeur and majesty, as well as its technical demands on the soloist. It is considered one of Beethoven's greatest works and a masterpiece of the piano concerto genre. The nickname "Emperor" was given to the concerto after Beethoven's death, in reference to the fact that it was reportedly played during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna in 1809.
