The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most renowned classical music ensembles in the world. Founded in 1882, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has been led by some of the most celebrated conductors of the 20th and 21st centuries. The orchestra was founded by 54 musicians who were dissatisfied with the quality of music in Berlin at the time. They came together to form an ensemble that would prioritize artistic excellence and innovation. The orchestra's first conductor was Benjamin Bilse, who led the ensemble until 1887. He was succeeded by Arthur Nikisch, who served as conductor until 1922 and is credited with establishing the orchestra's reputation for excellence. Under Nikisch's leadership, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra became known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Nikisch was a champion of the music of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, and he conducted the premieres of several of their works with the orchestra. He also introduced the music of Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky to Berlin audiences. After Nikisch's death in 1922, the orchestra was led by a series of distinguished conductors, including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. Furtwängler, who served as conductor from 1922 to 1945 and again from 1952 to 1954, is considered one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was known for his intense and emotional interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner. Von Karajan, who served as conductor from 1955 to 1989, is perhaps the most famous conductor in the orchestra's history. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create a unified sound from the orchestra. Under his leadership, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra became one of the most recorded ensembles in the world, and von Karajan was awarded numerous honors for his contributions to classical music. Abbado, who served as conductor from 1989 to 2002, was known for his commitment to contemporary music and his efforts to promote young musicians. He founded the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, which provides training and performance opportunities for young musicians. Abbado also conducted the orchestra in several groundbreaking performances, including a concert in Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. Since Abbado's departure, the orchestra has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Simon Rattle, who served as conductor from 2002 to 2018. Rattle was known for his innovative programming and his commitment to education and outreach. He founded the Berliner Philharmoniker's Education Program, which provides music education and performance opportunities for children and young people. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The orchestra has also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra has been awarded numerous honors and awards throughout its history. In 2008, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The orchestra has also been awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, the Japan Art Association's Praemium Imperiale, and the Polar Music Prize.
