Lorin Maazel was a renowned American conductor, violinist, and composer who was born on March 6, 1930, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. His parents were both musicians, and his father was a conductor. Maazel began playing the violin at the age of five and made his debut as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of eight. Maazel's family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when he was nine years old, and he continued his musical studies there. He studied conducting with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff and made his conducting debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the age of twelve. Maazel continued to study the violin and made his solo debut with the same orchestra at the age of fifteen. Maazel attended the University of Pittsburgh and later studied at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also studied with Pierre Monteux and Leopold Stokowski. Maazel's conducting career began to take off in the 1950s, and he became the youngest conductor ever to lead the Cleveland Orchestra in 1953. Maazel went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He was known for his precise and detailed conducting style and his ability to bring out the best in the musicians he worked with. Maazel was also a prolific composer and wrote music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions were often influenced by his experiences as a conductor, and he was known for his innovative use of orchestration and harmony. Maazel's career was marked by many highlights, including his tenure as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1972 to 1982. During his time with the orchestra, he led them on several international tours and recorded many acclaimed albums. Maazel also served as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Maazel was also a frequent guest conductor at the Salzburg Festival, where he conducted many of the world's leading opera companies. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Richard Wagner and conducted many of his operas, including Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Parsifal. Maazel was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Medal of Arts, the Legion of Honor from the French government, and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Maazel continued to conduct and compose music until his death on July 13, 2014, at the age of 84. He was remembered as one of the greatest conductors of his generation and a true innovator in the world of classical music.
