Founded in 1918 by Adella Prentiss Hughes, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and education. Hughes, a Cleveland native and music lover, founded the orchestra with the goal of bringing world-class music to her hometown. She recruited Nikolai Sokoloff, a Russian-born conductor, to lead the ensemble. The orchestra gave its first concert on December 11, 1918, at Grays Armory in downtown Cleveland. Over the years, the Cleveland Orchestra has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors in the world, including George Szell, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz Welser-Möst. Under Szell's leadership from 1946 to 1970, the orchestra became known for its precision and clarity of sound. Szell was a demanding conductor who pushed his musicians to their limits, but the results were extraordinary. The orchestra's recordings from this era are still considered some of the best ever made. Today, the Cleveland Orchestra is led by music director Franz Welser-Möst, who has been with the ensemble since 2002. Welser-Möst is known for his innovative programming and his commitment to new music. He has also led the orchestra on tours around the world, including to Europe, Asia, and South America. The Cleveland Orchestra is made up of 100 musicians, many of whom have been with the ensemble for decades. The orchestra's principal players are some of the most respected musicians in the world, including concertmaster William Preucil, principal cellist Mark Kosower, and principal oboist Frank Rosenwein. The Cleveland Orchestra has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The orchestra has also been a regular performer at the Blossom Music Center, an outdoor amphitheater in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, since 1968. One of the Cleveland Orchestra's most famous performances was its 1965 concert at the White House for President Lyndon B. Johnson. The orchestra played a program of American music, including works by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. The concert was broadcast on national television and helped to cement the orchestra's reputation as one of the best in the world. The Cleveland Orchestra has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1997, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for its recording of Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra. The orchestra has also been awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts organizations by the United States government. In addition to its performances, the Cleveland Orchestra is also committed to education and community outreach. The orchestra's education programs reach more than 60,000 students each year, and the orchestra also performs free concerts in Cleveland neighborhoods. Overall, the Cleveland Orchestra is a testament to the power of music to bring people together and inspire greatness. From its humble beginnings in 1918 to its current status as one of the world's most respected ensembles, the Cleveland Orchestra has remained true to its mission of bringing world-class music to audiences around the world.More....
