Role:ConductorBirth:June 23, 1943 in Cincinnati, OHDeath:March 9, 2021 in Palm Springs, CAPeriod:ContemporaryModernGenre:OperaJames Levine was born on June 23, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Levine began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from a young age. He went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied conducting with Jean Morel and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. Levine made his debut as a conductor in 1964, at the age of 21, with the Cleveland Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and in 1971 he was appointed music director of the Ravinia Festival, the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for four years, during which time he conducted a wide range of repertoire and established himself as one of the leading conductors of his generation. In 1973, Levine was appointed principal conductor of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, a position he held for 40 years. During his tenure at the Met, Levine conducted over 2,500 performances, including many of the company's most acclaimed productions. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in both singers and orchestral musicians. Levine's repertoire at the Met was vast and varied, ranging from Mozart and Verdi to Wagner and Strauss. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Richard Wagner, and he conducted many of the company's most celebrated productions of Wagner's operas, including the complete Ring cycle. He also championed the works of contemporary composers, and he conducted the world premieres of several new operas at the Met. In addition to his work at the Met, Levine was also a frequent guest conductor with other major orchestras around the world. He conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and many others. He was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings with the Met Orchestra and other ensembles received numerous awards and critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Levine received many honors and awards for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, and he received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2002. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2005. However, Levine's career was not without controversy. In 2017, he was suspended from his position at the Met following allegations of sexual misconduct. He denied the allegations, but he resigned from his position the following year. Despite the controversy surrounding his departure from the Met, Levine's contributions to classical music are undeniable. He was a gifted conductor and pianist, and his interpretations of the great works of the classical repertoire continue to inspire and move audiences around the world.More....
