The Wiener Singverein is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1858, the ensemble has a rich history of performing choral works by some of the greatest composers in history. The Wiener Singverein was founded by a group of music enthusiasts who wanted to create a choir that would perform the great choral works of the time. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and by the end of the 19th century, it had become one of the most respected choral groups in Europe. Over the years, the Wiener Singverein has had many members, but some of its most notable members include conductor Franz Schalk, who led the ensemble from 1900 to 1921, and conductor Herbert von Karajan, who served as the ensemble's principal conductor from 1947 to 1960. The Wiener Singverein has performed with some of the world's greatest orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. The ensemble has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of the Wiener Singverein's career was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein in 1979. The performance was recorded and released on video, and it has become one of the most famous performances of the work. The Wiener Singverein has also been recognized for its excellence with numerous awards and honors. In 2006, the ensemble was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 2018, it was awarded the Golden Medal of the City of Vienna. Today, the Wiener Singverein continues to perform at the highest level, and it remains one of the most respected choral ensembles in the world. Its commitment to excellence and its dedication to preserving the great choral works of the past make it a true treasure of the classical music world.
