He was the son of a choir director and grew up in a musical family. Wunderlich showed an early interest in music and began singing in his father's choir at a young age. He received his first vocal training from his father and later studied at the Freiburg Music Academy. Wunderlich made his professional debut in 1955 at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart, where he sang the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He quickly gained recognition for his beautiful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He went on to perform in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One of Wunderlich's most famous performances was his portrayal of Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival in 1960. His performance was widely praised for its beauty and sensitivity, and it helped to establish him as one of the leading tenors of his time. He also received critical acclaim for his performances in other Mozart operas, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Così fan tutte." In addition to his opera performances, Wunderlich was also a renowned concert singer. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the lieder of Schubert and Schumann, and he recorded many of these works during his career. He also performed in oratorios and cantatas, including Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" and "Christmas Oratorio." Wunderlich's career was tragically cut short when he died at the age of 35 in a fall from a window. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, and he is remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century. Throughout his career, Wunderlich received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1958, he was awarded the Mozart Medal by the Mozart Society of Frankfurt for his performances of Mozart's music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1964 for his services to music. Wunderlich's recordings continue to be popular with classical music fans today, and his legacy lives on through his many recordings and performances.
