The orchestra was originally founded as the Hofkapelle, or court orchestra, of the Elector of Bavaria. Over the centuries, it has evolved into the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, which is now based in the National Theatre in Munich. The orchestra has been led by many distinguished conductors over the years, including Richard Strauss, Hans Knappertsbusch, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Today, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra is led by Kirill Petrenko, who has been the General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera since 2013. The orchestra is made up of some of the most talented musicians in the world, many of whom have won prestigious awards and performed with other leading orchestras. Some of the orchestra's most notable members include concertmaster Radoslaw Szulc, principal cellist Maximilian Hornung, and principal oboist FranƧois Leleux. Over the years, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra has performed many memorable concerts and operas. One of its most famous performances was the world premiere of Richard Strauss's opera "Salome" in 1905. The orchestra has also performed many other works by Strauss, including "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Elektra." In addition to its performances of Strauss's music, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra has also been known for its interpretations of the works of other great composers. The orchestra has performed many of the operas of Mozart, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni." It has also performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner, among others.
