Born on May 5, 1930, in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, Schneidt showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the harpsichord, which became his primary instrument. Schneidt studied music at the Stuttgart Conservatory and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. He also received private lessons from the renowned harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt. Schneidt's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly established himself as a rising star in the classical music world. In 1957, Schneidt made his debut as a harpsichordist with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He went on to perform with many other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the English Chamber Orchestra. Schneidt was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the best in the music he played. In addition to his work as a harpsichordist, Schneidt was also a highly respected conductor. He made his conducting debut in 1962 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and went on to conduct many other orchestras, including the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Schneidt's most significant achievements was his work as the conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1965 to 1982 and helped to establish it as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world. Under Schneidt's leadership, the orchestra made many acclaimed recordings and performed at major music festivals around the world. Schneidt was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of Baroque music are considered some of the finest ever made. He recorded many works by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and other Baroque composers, and his recordings are still highly regarded by music lovers and critics alike. Throughout his career, Schneidt received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1977, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors. He was also awarded the Bach Medal by the city of Leipzig in 1990, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the performance and interpretation of Bach's music.
