The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Berlin, Germany. Founded in 1923, the orchestra has a rich history of performing and recording classical music, and has become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The RSO was originally established as the Berlin Radio Orchestra, and was created to provide music for the newly established German radio network. The orchestra's first conductor was Hermann Abendroth, who led the ensemble until 1934. During this time, the orchestra gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and recordings, and became a fixture in the German classical music scene. In 1934, the RSO was renamed the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and was placed under the direction of conductor Artur Rother. Rother led the orchestra until 1945, and during his tenure, the ensemble continued to perform and record extensively. However, the orchestra's activities were severely curtailed during World War II, and many of its members were conscripted into military service. After the war, the RSO was re-established under the direction of conductor Hermann Scherchen. Scherchen led the orchestra until 1953, and during his tenure, the ensemble began to expand its repertoire to include contemporary music. Scherchen was succeeded by conductor Ferenc Fricsay, who led the orchestra from 1954 until his death in 1963. Fricsay was known for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, and under his leadership, the RSO became one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. In the years following Fricsay's death, the RSO was led by a series of distinguished conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, and Marek Janowski. During this time, the orchestra continued to perform and record extensively, and became known for its interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and other classical composers. In recent years, the RSO has continued to build on its legacy of excellence, under the direction of conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Jurowski, who has been the orchestra's principal conductor since 2017, has led the ensemble in performances of works by contemporary composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina and Wolfgang Rihm, as well as classic works by Beethoven, Brahms, and others. Throughout its history, the RSO has been recognized for its outstanding performances and recordings. The orchestra has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d'Or, and the German Record Critics' Award. The RSO has also been featured in numerous film and television productions, and has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned classical musicians, including Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. Today, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world. With its rich history, outstanding musicianship, and commitment to excellence, the RSO continues to inspire and delight audiences around the globe.
