The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. The orchestra was founded in 1969 as the orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and has since become one of the leading orchestras in Europe. The founding of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra was a result of the merger of two existing orchestras, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Orchestra. The new ensemble was established with the aim of creating a world-class orchestra that would represent Austria's rich musical heritage and contribute to the country's cultural life. The orchestra's first chief conductor was Milan Horvat, who led the ensemble from 1969 to 1979. Under his leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Horvat was succeeded by Leif Segerstam, who served as chief conductor from 1982 to 1991. During his tenure, the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and collaborate with leading soloists and conductors. In 1991, Pinchas Steinberg was appointed as the orchestra's third chief conductor. Steinberg, a renowned conductor and violinist, brought a new level of artistic excellence to the ensemble. He led the orchestra on numerous international tours and recordings, and established the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Europe. After Steinberg's departure in 1997, the orchestra went through a period of transition, with several guest conductors leading the ensemble. In 2005, Bertrand de Billy was appointed as the orchestra's fourth chief conductor. De Billy, a French conductor, brought a fresh perspective to the ensemble and expanded its repertoire to include contemporary music and opera. Under de Billy's leadership, the orchestra has continued to thrive, with numerous successful tours and recordings. The ensemble has also collaborated with leading soloists and conductors, including Lang Lang, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Zubin Mehta. One of the highlights of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, where it performed Mahler's Symphony No. 8 under the baton of de Billy. The performance was widely acclaimed and cemented the orchestra's reputation as one of the leading Mahler interpreters in the world. The orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2010, it was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria, in recognition of its contributions to the country's cultural life. The ensemble has also won several prestigious recording awards, including the Diapason d'Or and the Echo Klassik. The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra continues to be a vital part of Austria's cultural landscape, with a commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. With its rich history and ongoing dedication to musical excellence, the orchestra is sure to remain a leading force in the classical music world for years to come.
