In 1953, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, conducting a production of Verdi's "La Traviata." This performance was a great success and marked the beginning of Gardelli's international career. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Gardelli conducted at many of the world's leading opera houses, including Covent Garden in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Vienna State Opera. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. He was also a champion of contemporary music and conducted many premieres of new works. One of Gardelli's most notable achievements was his work with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He was appointed the orchestra's principal conductor in 1973 and held the position until 1980. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in many acclaimed recordings, including a complete cycle of the symphonies of Beethoven. Gardelli was also a prolific recording artist and made over 200 recordings throughout his career. He recorded extensively for the Decca and Philips labels and won many awards for his recordings, including several Grammys.
