The Royal Opera House Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra was founded by John Rich, a theatre manager who was looking to create a new opera company in London. The company was originally called the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, and it quickly became one of the most popular venues for opera and theatre in London. Over the years, the ensemble has had many members, but some of the most notable include conductor Sir Georg Solti, who served as the music director from 1961 to 1971, and conductor Antonio Pappano, who has been the music director since 2002. One of the highlights of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra's history was the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida" in 1871. The opera was a huge success and has since become one of the most popular operas in the world. Another notable performance was the premiere of Benjamin Britten's opera "Peter Grimes" in 1945. The opera was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish Britten as one of the leading composers of the 20th century. The Royal Opera House Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra has also won many awards over the years. In 2011, the ensemble won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for its production of "The Damnation of Faust." The ensemble has also won numerous Grammy Awards for its recordings, including Best Opera Recording for its recording of Verdi's "Falstaff" in 1994. In addition to its performances at the Royal Opera House in London, the ensemble has also performed at many other venues around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. Today, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Chorus and Orchestra continues to be one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in the world.
