He was the youngest of eight children in a family of farmers. Vickers grew up in a musical family, and his mother was a church organist. He started singing in the church choir at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Vickers attended the University of Toronto, where he studied voice with Ernesto Vinci. He made his professional debut in 1950 with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, where he sang the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. In 1957, Vickers made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where he sang the role of Don José in Bizet's Carmen. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and it marked the beginning of his international career. Vickers went on to perform at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, and the Paris Opera. One of Vickers' most famous roles was that of Peter Grimes in Benjamin Britten's opera of the same name. He first performed the role in 1967 at the Royal Opera House in London, and it became one of his signature roles. Vickers' portrayal of Grimes was praised for its intensity and emotional depth, and he went on to perform the role many times throughout his career. Vickers was also known for his performances of Wagner's operas. He sang the role of Tristan in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival in 1966, and it was considered one of the greatest performances of the role in modern times. Vickers also sang the role of Siegmund in Wagner's Die Walküre at the Metropolitan Opera in 1975, and it was another highlight of his career. Throughout his career, Vickers received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1969, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, which is the highest civilian honor in Canada. He was also awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 1988, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. Vickers retired from performing in 1988, but he continued to be involved in the music world as a teacher and mentor. He taught at the University of Toronto and the Banff Centre for the Arts, and he also gave masterclasses around the world. Vickers was known for his dedication to his students and his passion for music, and he inspired many young singers to pursue careers in opera. Jon Vickers passed away on July 10, 2015, at the age of 88.
