Born on March 6, 1921, in Vienna, Austria, Rudel was raised in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Rudel showed a keen interest in music and began studying piano and composition. In 1938, Rudel and his family fled Austria to escape the Nazi regime and settled in New York City. Rudel continued his music education at the Juilliard School, where he studied conducting with Edgar Varèse and composition with Bernard Wagenaar. He also worked as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists, which helped him develop his skills as a conductor. In 1943, Rudel made his conducting debut with the New York City Opera, where he would spend the next 35 years of his career. He quickly established himself as a talented conductor and was appointed the company's principal conductor in 1957. During his tenure, Rudel conducted over 100 different operas, including works by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and Richard Strauss. One of Rudel's most significant achievements was his role in bringing American opera to the forefront of the classical music world. He championed the works of American composers such as Carlisle Floyd, Douglas Moore, and Gian Carlo Menotti, and helped to establish the New York City Opera as a leading venue for American opera. Rudel also had a successful career as an opera director, staging productions at the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and other major opera houses around the world. He was known for his innovative and visually stunning productions, which often incorporated elements of dance and theater. Throughout his career, Rudel received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1979, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Jimmy Carter, and in 1981, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also received honorary degrees from several universities, including the Juilliard School, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Miami. Rudel retired from the New York City Opera in 1979 but continued to conduct and direct opera productions around the world. He also served as a mentor to young conductors and composers, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of classical musicians. Julius Rudel passed away on June 26, 2014, at the age of 93. His legacy as a conductor, director, and champion of American opera continues to inspire and influence classical musicians around the world.More....
