Ketan Bhatti is a German-Indian composer and percussionist who has made a name for himself in the world of contemporary classical music. Born on May 28, 1983, in Bochum, Germany, Bhatti grew up in a family of musicians. His father, a tabla player, and his mother, a singer, exposed him to Indian classical music from a young age. Bhatti started playing the drums at the age of six and later went on to study percussion at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. Bhatti's interest in contemporary classical music was sparked during his studies at the university. He was particularly drawn to the works of composers such as Steve Reich, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Bhatti's compositions are heavily influenced by his Indian heritage and his love for experimental music. One of Bhatti's most notable works is his composition "Nodding Terms," which was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016. The piece is a fusion of Indian classical music and contemporary classical music and features a solo tabla player accompanied by a large orchestra. "Nodding Terms" was well-received by critics and audiences alike and cemented Bhatti's reputation as a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music. Another notable work by Bhatti is his composition "The Surface of Your Last Breath," which was commissioned by the Ensemble Modern in 2018. The piece is a meditation on death and features a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments. "The Surface of Your Last Breath" was inspired by Bhatti's own experiences with death and grief and is a deeply personal work. Bhatti's compositions often explore themes of identity, culture, and spirituality. His music is characterized by complex rhythms, unconventional instrumentation, and a willingness to experiment with different genres and styles. Bhatti's work has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. In addition to his work as a composer, Bhatti is also an accomplished percussionist. He has performed with a variety of ensembles and musicians, including the German jazz pianist Michael Wollny and the Indian classical musician Ravi Shankar. Bhatti's percussion skills are often on display in his compositions, which feature intricate rhythms and percussive textures. Bhatti's work has earned him numerous awards and accolades. In 2017, he was awarded the Berlin Art Prize, which recognizes outstanding artists working in Berlin. He has also been a recipient of the Villa Massimo Fellowship, which provides artists with a residency in Rome, Italy. Despite his success, Bhatti remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music and to explore new ways of fusing different musical traditions. Bhatti's work is a testament to the power of music to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers and to connect people from different parts of the world.
