He made his debut as a pianist in 1947 and soon after, he started conducting. In 1953, he became the assistant conductor of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal conductor of the opera in 1957. Sawallisch's career as a conductor took off in the 1960s when he started conducting major orchestras around the world. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also a champion of contemporary music and conducted premieres of works by Hans Werner Henze, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and György Ligeti. One of Sawallisch's most significant achievements was his tenure as the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1993 to 2003. During his time there, he led the orchestra on numerous tours and recordings, including a critically acclaimed cycle of the complete symphonies of Brahms.
