Born on March 15, 1928, in Essen, Germany, Crass was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. He began his musical training at an early age and showed a natural talent for singing. Crass studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where he received a solid foundation in music theory and vocal technique. He then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, where he honed his skills as a singer and performer. During his studies, Crass was mentored by renowned vocal coaches such as Hermann Weissenborn and Paul Lohmann. Crass made his professional debut in 1952 at the Stadttheater in Regensburg, where he performed the role of Sarastro in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, and soon became a sought-after performer in Germany and beyond. One of Crass's most notable performances was his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's "Ring Cycle." He first performed the role in 1960 at the Bayreuth Festival, and went on to perform it at other major opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London. Crass's interpretation of Wotan was praised for its depth and nuance, and he became known as one of the greatest interpreters of the role. In addition to his performances in opera, Crass was also a prolific concert singer. He performed regularly with major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic, and was known for his interpretations of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Crass's rich, resonant voice and impeccable technique made him a favorite among audiences and critics alike. Throughout his career, Crass received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors. He was also awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. Crass continued to perform well into his later years, and remained an active member of the classical music community until his death in 2012 at the age of 84. His legacy as one of the greatest bass-baritones of the 20th century lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to see him perform live.More....
