Erna Berger was a German soprano who was born on October 19, 1900, in Dresden, Germany. She was the daughter of a violinist and a pianist, and her parents recognized her musical talent at an early age. Berger began her musical training at the Dresden Conservatory, where she studied piano, violin, and voice. She made her debut as a concert singer in 1920, and her operatic debut followed in 1921, when she appeared as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Dresden State Opera. Berger quickly established herself as one of the leading sopranos of her time, and she became known for her clear, pure voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Mozart's operas, and she performed in many productions of "The Magic Flute," "Don Giovanni," and "The Marriage of Figaro" throughout her career. In addition to her work in opera, Berger was also a prolific concert singer, and she performed in recitals and concerts throughout Europe and the United States. She was known for her interpretations of lieder, or German art songs, and she recorded many of these works during her career. One of the highlights of Berger's career came in 1933, when she was invited to perform at the Bayreuth Festival, the annual festival dedicated to the music of Richard Wagner. Berger sang the role of Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin," and her performance was widely praised for its beauty and emotional depth. Berger's career was interrupted by World War II, and she was forced to flee Germany in 1944 due to her opposition to the Nazi regime. She settled in Switzerland, where she continued to perform in concerts and recitals. After the war, she returned to Germany and resumed her career, performing in many of the country's leading opera houses and concert halls. Berger's career continued to flourish throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and she received many honors and awards for her contributions to classical music. In 1955, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors. She also received the Grand Cross of Merit with Star and Sash in 1960. Berger retired from performing in 1966, and she spent her later years teaching voice at the Berlin University of the Arts. She died on June 14, 1990, at the age of 89. Throughout her career, Erna Berger was known for her beautiful voice, her emotional depth, and her dedication to the music she loved. She remains one of the most beloved sopranos of the 20th century, and her recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight classical music lovers around the world.
