She was the daughter of a prominent Viennese conductor and composer, and her mother was a well-known opera singer. From a young age, Hilde showed a natural talent for music, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in the field. Hilde began her formal music education at the Vienna Conservatory, where she studied piano, violin, and voice. She quickly excelled in all three areas, and her teachers recognized her exceptional talent. At the age of 16, Hilde made her debut as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major. Over the next few years, Hilde continued to perform as a soloist with various orchestras throughout Europe. She also began to develop a reputation as a skilled accompanist, and she frequently collaborated with other musicians in chamber music performances. In 1941, Hilde was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. Her performance was a huge success, and she was invited back to the festival for several more years. During this time, Hilde also began to make recordings for various record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon and EMI. She quickly became a favorite among American audiences, and she was invited to perform with many of the country's top orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of Hilde's most memorable performances took place in 1951, when she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and it cemented Hilde's reputation as one of the world's greatest pianists. Throughout her career, Hilde received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music.
