From a young age, Varnay was exposed to music and began singing in choirs and performing in operas. Varnay's family moved to Budapest when she was a child, and she continued her musical education there. She studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and made her debut as a soloist at the age of 18, singing the role of Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier." Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented young singer. In 1940, Varnay made her debut at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, singing the role of Brünnhilde in Wagner's "Die Walküre." This performance marked the beginning of her international career, and she soon became known for her interpretations of Wagner's heroines. Her performance was a sensation, and she quickly became one of the Met's most popular singers. Over the course of her career, Varnay performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. She was particularly renowned for her performances in Wagner's operas, and she sang the role of Brünnhilde more than 200 times. She also performed in many other operas, including Verdi's "Aida," Puccini's "Tosca," and Strauss's "Salome." Varnay was known for her powerful and expressive voice, which was capable of conveying a wide range of emotions. She was also known for her dramatic stage presence and her ability to inhabit the characters she portrayed.
