Born on January 17, 1919, in Berezivka, Ukraine, Malaniuk grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied at the Lysenko Music School in Lviv and later at the Kiev Conservatory, where she trained under the renowned Ukrainian soprano Solomiya Krushelnytska. Malaniuk made her professional debut in 1943 at the Lviv Opera House, where she performed the role of Olga in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence, and soon began performing at major opera houses throughout Europe. In 1949, Malaniuk made her debut at the Vienna State Opera, where she performed the role of Amneris in Verdi's Aida. This performance was a major turning point in her career, as it led to engagements at other major opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Malaniuk was known for her rich, velvety voice and her ability to convey deep emotion through her performances. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Verdi, Mozart, and Wagner, and was considered one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of her time. Throughout her career, Malaniuk received numerous awards and accolades for her performances. In 1953, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, and in 1958 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. She also received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1963 and was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera in 1970. One of Malaniuk's most memorable performances was her portrayal of Azucena in Verdi's Il trovatore at the Salzburg Festival in 1951. Her powerful performance earned her critical acclaim and cemented her reputation as one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of her time. Malaniuk continued to perform throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but her health began to decline in the 1980s. She retired from the stage in 1986 and passed away on March 13, 1996, in Vienna, Austria. Despite her untimely death, Malaniuk's legacy lives on through her recordings and performances, which continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
