Das Rheingold is the first of the four operas that make up Richard Wagner's epic cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Wotan and his servant Loge visit the Nibelungs in order to steal the ring from Alberich. They succeed in taking the ring, but Alberich curses it, warning that it will bring destruction to whoever possesses it. The final scene sees the gods entering Valhalla, while the giants demand their payment. Wotan tricks the giants by giving them the Rhinegold, but then uses his power to destroy them. As the gods celebrate their victory, the curse of the ring begins to take effect, setting the stage for the events of the subsequent operas in the cycle.
