Margarete Klose was a German mezzo-soprano who was born on August 17, 1899, in Berlin, Germany. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Klose began her musical training at a young age and studied at the Berlin Conservatory. She made her debut in 1921 at the Berlin State Opera as the Third Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Klose quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. She became a regular performer at the Berlin State Opera and also appeared in productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. One of Klose's most notable performances was in Richard Strauss's "Salome" at the Berlin State Opera in 1925. She played the role of Herodias, the mother of Salome, and received critical acclaim for her performance. Klose's interpretation of the role was praised for its intensity and emotional depth. Klose also had a successful concert career and performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. She was known for her interpretations of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart, as well as contemporary composers such as Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. In addition to her performances, Klose was also a respected voice teacher. She taught at the Berlin Conservatory and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Her students included some of the most prominent singers of the 20th century, including Christa Ludwig and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Klose's career was interrupted by the rise of the Nazi party in Germany. She was forced to leave the Berlin State Opera in 1933 because of her Jewish heritage. Klose continued to perform in concerts and recitals, but her opportunities were limited. She eventually fled Germany in 1938 and settled in Switzerland. After World War II, Klose resumed her performing career and appeared in productions at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. She also continued to teach and was a professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich from 1950 until her retirement in 1965. Klose received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. She was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Berlin State Opera in 1929, and in 1955 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Klose was also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Margarete Klose died on November 14, 1968, in Munich, Germany. She is remembered as one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century, known for her powerful voice, dramatic stage presence, and dedication to teaching the next generation of singers.
