Born on September 1, 1941, in Nagyvárad, Hungary (now Oradea, Romania), Varady grew up in a musical family. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Varady showed a natural talent for singing, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Varady began her formal music education at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she studied under the renowned soprano Erzsi Németh. She made her professional debut in 1962 at the Hungarian State Opera, where she quickly established herself as a rising star. Her powerful voice and emotive performances earned her critical acclaim, and she soon became one of the most sought-after sopranos in Europe. In 1966, Varady made her debut at the Salzburg Festival, where she performed the role of Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Her performance was a resounding success, and she was invited back to the festival for several more seasons. In 1969, she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera, where she performed the role of Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. Her performance was once again a triumph, and she quickly became a favorite of Viennese audiences. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Varady continued to perform at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Paris Opera. She also made numerous recordings, including a highly acclaimed performance of Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. In addition to her work in opera, Varady also became known for her performances of lieder and other vocal music. She collaborated with some of the world's most renowned pianists, including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and András Schiff, and her recordings of Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms songs are considered some of the finest interpretations of these works. Throughout her career, Varady received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1974, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, and in 1983, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She was also awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit in 1991 and the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1995.
