He was the son of the famous conductor and composer Hans Albrecht, who was the founder of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra. Gerd Albrecht grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. He started playing the piano at the age of six and showed a great talent for music. Albrecht studied music at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and later at the Juilliard School in New York. He also studied conducting with Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein. Albrecht made his debut as a conductor in 1963 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich in 1975. Albrecht's career as a conductor took off in the 1980s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He held this position from 1982 to 1990 and during this time, he made several recordings with the orchestra. Albrecht was also the principal conductor of the Hamburg State Opera from 1988 to 1997.
