He was born on 17th June 1940 in Essen, Germany. From a young age, Giesen showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his early musical training from his mother, who was a pianist herself. Giesen's talent was soon recognized, and he was accepted into the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Detlef Kraus. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, where he was taught by Professor Hugo Steurer. Giesen's career as a professional musician began in the early 1960s when he won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Munich. This victory marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career that would see him perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. One of the highlights of Giesen's career was his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1965. He was invited to perform alongside the legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan, and the performance was a resounding success. This performance helped to establish Giesen as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Over the years, Giesen has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and Sir Simon Rattle. In addition to his work as a performer, Giesen has also made a significant contribution to the world of music as a teacher. He has taught at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Many of his students have gone on to have successful careers as professional musicians.
