He was the son of a local schoolteacher and began his musical education at a young age. He studied piano with Johann Nepomuk Fuchs and composition with Ferenc Erkel, the composer of Hungary's national anthem. Nikisch made his debut as a pianist at the age of ten and began conducting at the age of nineteen. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed as the conductor of the Leipzig Opera in 1878. He remained in this position for ten years and during this time, he also conducted the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. In 1889, Nikisch was appointed as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, becoming the first non-American conductor to hold this position. He remained in this position for five years and during this time, he introduced many new works to American audiences, including works by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. In 1895, Nikisch returned to Europe and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He remained in this position until his death in 1922.
