Vasily Petrenko is a renowned classical music conductor who was born on July 7, 1976, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia). He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Petrenko started playing the piano at the age of three and later learned to play the violin and the trumpet. He attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied conducting under the tutelage of Ilya Musin. Petrenko's career as a conductor began in 1997 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra.
