He was born on December 10, 1938, in the city of Nalchik, in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of the Soviet Union. His parents were both musicians, and his father was a conductor. Temirkanov showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at the age of nine. Temirkanov's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the Leningrad Conservatory at the age of 13. He studied under the renowned violinist David Oistrakh and the conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky. Temirkanov's studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Soviet Army, but he continued to play the violin in the army orchestra. After completing his military service, Temirkanov returned to the Leningrad Conservatory to continue his studies. He graduated in 1965 and began his career as a conductor. His first appointment was as the assistant conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed the principal conductor of the orchestra in 1968. Temirkanov's talent as a conductor was soon recognized outside of Russia, and he began to receive invitations to conduct orchestras around the world. In 1976, he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and he has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. One of Temirkanov's most significant achievements was his tenure as the principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He held this position from 1992 to 1998 and was credited with revitalizing the orchestra and raising its profile on the international stage. Temirkanov has also been recognized for his work as a music educator. He has held teaching positions at the Leningrad Conservatory, the Moscow Conservatory, and the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He has also conducted masterclasses around the world and has mentored many young musicians who have gone on to successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Temirkanov has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland by the Russian government. He has also been awarded the Order of Friendship and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Temirkanov's recordings have also received critical acclaim. He has recorded extensively with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and his recordings of the works of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev are considered to be some of the best available. In addition to his work as a conductor, Temirkanov is also a composer. He has written several works for orchestra, including a symphony and a violin concerto. Despite his many achievements, Temirkanov remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He has said that his goal as a conductor is to "bring the music to life" and to "communicate the composer's intentions to the audience." His passion for music and his commitment to excellence have made him one of the most respected and admired conductors of his generation.More....
