Mariss Jansons was a Latvian conductor who was widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished conductors of his generation. Born on January 14, 1943, in Riga, Latvia, Jansons was the son of the famous conductor Arvid Jansons and the singer Iraida Jansons. His father was the conductor of the Latvian National Opera, and his mother was a well-known soprano. Jansons began his musical education at an early age, studying violin and piano. He later attended the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied conducting under the tutelage of Yevgeny Mravinsky. After completing his studies, Jansons began his career as a conductor, working with a number of orchestras in the Soviet Union. In 1979, Jansons was appointed as the principal conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for 23 years. During his tenure with the orchestra, Jansons helped to establish it as one of the leading orchestras in Europe. He also conducted a number of acclaimed recordings with the orchestra, including works by Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Shostakovich. In 1997, Jansons was appointed as the principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2004. During his time with the orchestra, Jansons helped to raise its profile and establish it as one of the leading orchestras in the United States. He also conducted a number of acclaimed recordings with the orchestra, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss. In 2003, Jansons was appointed as the principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. During his tenure with the orchestra, Jansons helped to maintain its reputation for excellence and conducted a number of acclaimed recordings, including works by Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich.
