Orchestra Victoria is a classical music ensemble based in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1969, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and versatile ensembles in the country, performing a wide range of repertoire from classical to contemporary music. The orchestra was originally established as the Victoria State Orchestra, with the aim of providing a professional orchestra for the state of Victoria. The founding members included musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Symphony Orchestra, and the Victorian College of the Arts. Over the years, Orchestra Victoria has worked with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Yo-Yo Ma. The orchestra has also collaborated with major opera companies, including Opera Australia and the Victorian Opera. One of the highlights of Orchestra Victoria's history was its involvement in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The orchestra was selected to perform at the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as at various cultural events throughout the games. The orchestra's performance of Peter Sculthorpe's "Welcome Ceremony" at the opening ceremony was particularly memorable, and received widespread acclaim. In addition to its performances with major opera companies, Orchestra Victoria has also established itself as a leading ensemble in the field of ballet. The orchestra has been the resident orchestra for the Australian Ballet since 1969, and has performed with other major ballet companies, including the Bolshoi Ballet and the Royal Ballet. Orchestra Victoria has also been recognized for its commitment to contemporary music. The orchestra has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Australian composers, including Peter Sculthorpe, Brett Dean, and Elena Kats-Chernin. In 2011, the orchestra was awarded the APRA Art Music Award for Excellence in Music Education for its work in promoting contemporary music to young audiences. The orchestra has undergone several changes in leadership over the years. In 2014, Nicolette Fraillon was appointed as the orchestra's first female chief conductor and artistic director. Fraillon has been praised for her innovative programming and her commitment to promoting Australian music. In recent years, Orchestra Victoria has continued to expand its repertoire and reach. The orchestra has performed at major festivals, including the Melbourne Festival and the Adelaide Festival, and has toured extensively throughout Australia and internationally. In 2019, the orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary with a series of special concerts and events.
