Henryk Wieniawski was a Polish composer and violinist who lived from 1835 to 1880. He was known for his virtuosic violin playing and his compositions for the instrument. One of his most famous works is the "Mazurkas (2) for violin & piano, Op. 19." The "Mazurkas (2) for violin & piano, Op. 19" were composed in 1853 when Wieniawski was just 18 years old. They were premiered in the same year in Warsaw, Poland. The two movements of the piece are both mazurkas, a traditional Polish dance in triple meter. The first movement, marked Allegro moderato, is in the key of G major. It begins with a lively and rhythmic piano introduction, followed by the violin's entrance with the main theme. The violin and piano take turns playing the melody and accompanying each other throughout the movement. There are several virtuosic passages for the violin, showcasing Wieniawski's skill as a performer and composer. The second movement, marked Andantino, is in the key of A minor. It begins with a melancholic and lyrical violin melody, accompanied by simple piano chords. The violin's melody is then repeated with more ornamentation and variation. The middle section of the movement is more lively and features a faster tempo. The movement ends with a return to the original melody, played by the violin with a more elaborate accompaniment from the piano. Overall, the "Mazurkas (2) for violin & piano, Op. 19" are characteristic of Wieniawski's style, featuring virtuosic passages for the violin and a strong emphasis on melody. The use of the mazurka dance form also reflects Wieniawski's Polish heritage and his interest in incorporating traditional music into his compositions.
